Have you ever owned your own business before? Or maybe you ran your own website for a hobby you really enjoyed. One of the most important things in today's cyber world is be found on the popular search engines like Google, Bing, or Yahoo.
Makes perfect sense if you really think about it. A sea of random cyber junk floating around on the web, drifting, waiting to be discovered. I just described my old website. Sure at the time, I was pretty excited about it. As an artist and photographer my website was loaded with beautiful images I had created. I thought to myself, "People would be crazy not to want to hire this talent". And then it dawned me.
I did a quick Google search for the niche I was trying to get into, to see what kind of visibility I had, and...nothing! I wasn't on the first page, second page, shoot I wasn't even on the 1st 10 pages. That's when I did a Google search to find out why? SEO, yes...that is totally a thing!
SEO, AD Words, Google WM Tools
After discovering SEO and the power it has in helping an audience find you and your website lost out at sea, I did a quick YouTube search. I was able to drown myself in "How to videos" on SEO, Ad Words and using Google WM tools. There is a wealth of information out there, it's almost overwhelming. From there, I decided to scrap my website and rebuild it from the ground up.
See the problem with my old website was that it had no content. Content is defined as in literature, words, adjectives, describing things. Yeah.. surprisingly enough, my old website lacked the very basic principles. I bet your asking yourself, "OK, so if you didn't have any content, what exactly did you have on your website?" and that is a valid question.
I am a visual artist, a photographer of sorts. I talk with my hands (it's a bad habit, I know. Haha) I draw pictures to get my point across, I am great with emojis and I enjoy communicating visually. With that all being said, all my website had in it were photos. Just photos, not much else. I learned that Google has an extremely tough time reading content from photos. Giving my website a really poor rating which would in return be the reason why my website was not showing up in Google searches. All because a few simple key words like; "photographer," "event photography," or "Austin" were completely missing from my website.
Passing on what I learned
First thing you will want to do is run your website through the Google WM tools.
There is an abundance of info just in the WM Tools. Google has a check list for you to go through and once your website passes their test. Then you can move on to the next phase, ad words. One thing I did was search SEO on Google and found a bunch of helpful, free material.
Then if you have a little bit of extra money, it wouldn't hurt to create an AD on google.
I just started using Ad Words, so I will let you know how it works out for me. :)
That's all I have for you so far.
That's it so far, I will try to blog more and let you know what kind of updates and results I get with the new design of my website. Until next time, if you know anyone that needs an event photographer, I am paying 15% per client booked. This is exclusively for my followers! ;)
