What size of Image should I use on Facebook?
We all upload images to our Facebook pages, but do you know the best size to use when uploading to Facebook? Have you ever uploaded an image and it was pixelated or too small? Maybe you want to hire a photographer to create images for your Facebook page, how big of an image should you ask for? Without getting too technical in the details, let's dive into this subject and discover what size of image you should be using when you upload an image to Facebook! (Special Note: PNGs will always perform better than a JPG)
Key Factor to Consider
Just wanted to point out a key factor that may get over looked most of the time and that is, what kind of output device is your audience viewing your Facebook page from. What does that mean? I am talking about, is your audience using a smart phone or a large desktop computer to view your images? The dimensions I cover below are for desktop computers that have a larger viewing output. Smart phones have a smaller screen, therefor a smaller viewing output, which means the images can be smaller and still look good.
Did you know that Facebook resizes & then displays images in your timeline and in the News Feed at 470 pixels wide? Facebook suggests that we "upload images that are at least 1200 x 630 pixels for the best display on high resolution devices. At the minimum, you should use images that are 600 x 315 pixels to display link page posts with larger images. Images can be up to 8MB in size.”
What is the best size to use when changing your profile image? Believe it or not, you could use an image as small as 180x180 px. I was actually surprised to learn that you only needed 180px for your profile image. Facebook displays your profile image only at 160x160px.
Your background or better known as your cover photo has a bit of an unusual dimension to it. For the best fit for your cover photo you want to use 820x310px. Now you're probably thinking, "How in the heck am I suppose to crop an image to those specs?"
Here are a few "easy" DIY options:
- Use a larger image and let Facebook crop it for you when you upload it
- Use the internet - https://imagesplitter.net/
- Use image editing software (Adobe Create Cloud)
If you need images for an upcoming Ad Campaign, the ideal size to use would be 254x133px. This will make Facebook happy and will ensure your image has good quality when being displayed at the bottom right column of Facebook.
Facebook suggests that you should upload a file that has a minimum dimension of 600px, and for the absolute best quality use 1200px. Personally, I do not believe that 1200px is needed, instead I feel 800px is pretty damn good for displaying Facebook images. My opinion is based off of my own personal tests have shown and knowing what the required pixel count is for printing images. (Printing is a whole other subject! lol)
